The University Council is the leading body of the University and its members stay in office for four years.
President Prof. Ulrike Tappeiner, who comes from Montan, studied biology and computer science at the University of Innsbruck and she qualified as full university professor in ecology in 1996. She has headed the Eurac Institute for Alpine Environment since 1995. From 2012 to 2018, she was Dean of the Faculty of Biology at the Leopold-Franzens University of Innsbruck, before being appointed President of the Free University of Bozen-Bolzano. Prof. Ulrike Tappeiner's research focuses on biodiversity research, climate change and ecosystem services. She also conducts inter- and transdisciplinary research on social-ecological systems in mountain areas. In all these fields she has coordinated numerous international research projects and published more than 270 international publications and 25 books. She has been awarded several scientific prizes, including the Science Prize of the Südtiroler Sparkasse Foundation in 2019 for her complete scientific work and the "Research Award Südtirol" in 2020. She has been President of the Free University of Bolzano since 2018.

The lawyer and departmental director for Italian culture, environment and energy of the Autonomous Province of Bozen-Bolzano Dott. Antonio Lampis in 2022 has been appointed by the provincial government as a member of the University Council. From 2017 to 2020, the Bolzano native was General Director for Museums at the Ministry of Cultural Assets and Heritage. The General Director is in charge of more than 450 state museums and the national museum system, which includes more than 4,500 museums of various ownerships. In 2019, the cultural management professional was included in the list of "100 Italian Excellence (100 eccellenze italiane)", an award given by a jury chaired by the Deputy Vice President of the Constitutional Court. The award is under the patronage of the Presidency of the Council of Ministers, numerous ministries and business associations.

Alex Weissensteiner is a professor of quantitative finance. He completed his doctoral studies at the Leopold-Franzens University of Innsbruck. In the following years, he conducted research and taught at the Universities of Innsbruck and Liechtenstein. In 2013, he accepted the position of Professor for Financial Engineering at the Technical University of Denmark. At the Free University of Bolzano, he served as Coordinator of the Quality Committee (2016-2020), Vice-Dean for Studies (2018-2020), Study Course Director of the Bachelor in Economics and Management (2015-2020), and Vice-Rector for Studies (2020-2024). He teaches subjects such as financial mathematics, financial risk management, and quantitative finance. His research interests lie in asset allocation and both theoretical and empirical asset pricing. He has published in leading journals in his field. Alex Weissensteiner is fluent in German, Italian and English.
Dott. André Comploi, born in 1982, comes from St. Vigil in Enneberg and now lives and works in Milan. He completed his studies in musicology and theatre studies at the University of Vienna and in sacred music at the Vienna Conservatory, all with distinction. From 2006 he worked full-time at the Vienna State Opera, from 2010 to 2020 in the position of press officer. On 1 March 2020, he moved to the Teatro alla Scala in Milan as Artistic Coordinator. Dott. André Comploi holds teaching positions at the universities of Vienna and Bolzano, has published several publications on music and theatre in Ladin, directs numerous music and theatre projects and is a jury member at international music competitions. Since 2022 he has been a member of the artistic-scientific advisory board of the Busoni-Mahler Foundation and a member of the University Council of the Free University of Bozen-Bolzano.
Dott. Harald Oberrauch heads the Brixen-based companies Durst Phototechnik and Alupress as President of the management board. After studying business administration in Bologna, he studied at the London Business School and the London School of Economics. In 2014, he founded TBA-Tyrolean Business Angel GmbH, his start-up investment vehicle, as Executive Director. In 2018, he co-founded tban-Tyrolean Business Angel Network, a platform that supports early-stage technology-based start-ups. In 2019, he co-founded CovisionLab, a consortium of seven South Tyrolean technology companies. In 2021, he founded adddam, company dealing with 3D printing. Since 2018, Dott. Harald Oberrauch has been a member of the University Council of the Free University of Bozen-Bolzano. As Vice President of the South Tyrolean Entrepreneurs' Association, he is in charge of the university and internationalisation agendas.
Born in Bruneck in 1958, Prof. Alexander Steinkasserer studied biology at the University of Innsbruck. From 1986 to 1989 he worked as a postdoc at the Institute of Immunology at the University of Munich, and from 1989 to 1993 as a Research Fellow at the Biochemistry Institute at the University of Oxford. From 1993 to 1996 he worked in the pharmaceutical industry at Novartis and Baxter in Vienna, and from 1997 to 1998 as head of department at the Immunological Day Clinic in Vienna. Since 1998, Alexander Steinkasserer has been a professor at the Friedrich-Alexander University of Erlangen-Nuremberg and heads the Department of Immunomodulation at the University Hospital Erlangen. He was awarded the Futura Foundation's sponsorship prize for South Tyroleans abroad, among other prizes. Prof. Alexander Steinkasserer has been a member of the University Council of the Free University of Bozen-Bolzano since 2018.
Günther Mathà was a member of the founding team of the Free University of Bozen-Bolzano, has been its Managing Director since 2012 and has been an advisory member of the University Council since then. A journalist by training, he holds a Master's degree in philosophy and training in higher education management from the University of Fribourg/Switzerland, the London Business School and an IDM-C in global management from INSEAD in Fontainebleau.
Elisa Bortolotti represents students on the University Council since June 2024.
Dott. Luis Durnwalder is since 2002 Honorary President of the Free University of Bozen-Bolzano.
