Social work as a profession and discipline faces complex challenges due to political, economic, and societal crises. This makes it even more important to develop an awareness of the intersections between different dimensions of inequality and to conduct a critical analysis of existing power structures and structural discrimination rather than adopting an isolated and purely reactive approach to social problems. Moreover, addressing multiple crises requires building solidarity-based alliances and strengthening care work as a central political responsibility.
At the same time, professional social work is increasingly affected by delegitimisation processes, which manifest through excluding solidarities, an expanding compassion economy and shifting perceptions of social issues. The shortage of professionals, lack of recognition, and challenging working conditions further exacerbate this situation, making social work less attractive as a profession and field of study.
On the occasion of World Social Work Day, this Pro Action Café offers an open platform for reflection and networking. Students, professionals, educators, researchers, activists, and decision-makers are invited to jointly discuss perspectives on the future of social work in South Tyrol and to develop strategies for strengthening resilience, building alliances, and promoting care as a public concern and responsibility.
