Laboratory for Analytical Chemistry

description

All research groups use this laboratory for the analysis of plants, soil samples and water to determine the chemical composition, in terms of both elements and organic compounds.

Image + Text

Research Focus

Characterisation of physiological and biochemical responses of crops to biotic and abiotic stress. Evaluation of the nutraceutical features of agricultural products. Analysis of oxygen and hydrogen isotopes in liquid samples to trace the water cycle in ecosystems.
Chemical ecology: Electroantennography is used to record electrical potentials from insect antennae. These potentials provide information about olfactory perception in insects.

Main Instrumentation

The lab contains several instruments for research performed in the lab:

  • Two HPLC systems, one equipped with PDA detector and the other with fluorescence detector
  • A microtome
  • A Gas Chromatography – Mass Spectrometry system
  • A Single Reaction Chamber (SRC) microwave digestion system
  • Inductively-Coupled Plasma – Optical Emission Spectroscopy
  • Two chemical hoods
  • UV-Vis Spectrophotometer
  • pH meter
  • Picarro Isotope analyser
  • Microscope
  • GC-EAD coupled with an electroantennogram apparatus
  • GC-MS with Gerstel autosampler MPS 2XL

Location

Room E0.12

Laboratory for Analytical Chemistry II

All research groups use this laboratory for the analysis of plants, soil and microbial samples to determine and characterize, by chemical, physiological, biochemical and biomolecular approaches, all the variables involved due to biotic and abiotic stresses.

Research Focus

Characterization of physiological, chemical, molecular and biochemical responses of crops to biotic and abiotic stresses.
Evaluation of the nutraceutical features of agricultural products. Qualitative and quantitative HPLC analysis of plant molecules and HTC byproducts. Soil-plant-rhizosphere microbiome profiling. Analysis of genetic and molecular pathways controlling agricultural traits and environmental adaptation in model plant species. Genetic characterization of insect species and their microbial community
