The Competence Center Tourism and Mobility (CCTM) is based at the University Campus Bruneck-Brunico. The Bachelor in Tourism, Sport and Event Management of the Faculty of Economics and Management is located there. The Competence Centre is a joint institution of the university and the regional Circle of Founders, which is consists of municipalities and mountain railway companies from Pustertal. By applied research, the Competence Centre contributes to the sustainable development of the regional tourism economy, paying particular attention to questions of tourism product development and mobility. This should also strengthen the Bruneck-Brunico Campus and stimulate cooperation with the regional economy.

South Tyrol and especially Pustertal are pretty intensive tourist regions. The outstanding natural potential, the special culture at the corssroads between Romance and Germanic languages as well as the continuous development of the tourism supply have lead South Tyrol to one of the most successful tourism areas in Europe. However, the steady growth is increasingly associated with undesirable effects, which are currently being discussed in the context of Overtourism.

Tourist mobility is both a driver and a constraint. A driver, because mobility is becoming increasingly important as the basis and integrative part of travel experiences. Guests feel particularly attracted to the Alps as a scenery and action for mobility-based experiences. A constraint, as the capacity of transport networks and points of interest is limited. Often networks can't be expanded into the narrow valleys. In addition, the transport networks not only serve the guests, but also the local population.

By research, the Competence Centre contributes to safeguarding the sustainability of South Tyrol as a living and economic area by:

  • The creation of assessment basis: The collection and processing of data describing guests expectations and their mobility requirements provides the basis for a deeper understanding of the connections between tourist demand and regional mobility.
  • Forecasts of market trends: Consumer behaviour in tourism is linked to social and economic trends. Urban societies are currently undergoing rapid change. There, in particular, mobility is changing rapidly caused by new technologies and the need for climate protection. The Competence Centre analyses the potential effects of these changes. It looks at upcoming changes in the regions' key source markets in order to identify both opportunities and threats.
  • Accompanying product development: Further concerns of the Competence Centre are applied research in the field of consumer expectations, identification and presentation of new tourism trends or the questioning of existing business models. These activities are based on a dialogue with the regional tourism economy and mobility service providers. Thus, the Centre contributes continuously to regional product development and competitiveness making use of both the results of international research and its own studies.
  • Networking stakeholder groups and exchanging know-how: Beside applied research, the Competence Centre takes an active role as platform for dialogue and discussion. It creates a database on current regional projects in tourism and mobility. Together with the project responsible stakeholders from the tourism and mobility economy it makes results accessible. By expert hearings and workshops, which are organised in cooperation with the regional umbrella organisations, it is committed to continuous networking and the expansion of the knowledge base.
