Historical economics emphasizes the big picture, illustrating how historical events and institutions have shaped modern societies. By combining historical analysis with quantitative methods, it uncovers insights that guide today’s policies. This year, Prof. Sascha Becker (Warwick) will deliver the keynote on religion and economic development. Additional topics include the origins of organized crime, the influence of place names on identity, attitudes toward elders, the role of education in spreading harmful ideologies, the Orthodox Church’s support for Putin, and how families pass down occupational choices such as surnames.
