full title: "Caught between Cultures: Unintended Consequences of Connecting Immigrant Youth to Opportunity".
abstract: A frequent occurrence in immigrant families is a clash betweenparents and children over cultural values. This can havefar-reaching implications for youth welfare and it is unclear whether well-intentioned,opportunity-enhancing interventions have desired effects on immigrant youth.Building on the idea of Akerlof and Kranton (2000) that identity, or a person'ssense of self, affects economic outcomes, we construct a simple game-theoretic model, which allows identity-concerned parents to proscribe children's choices. Usinga legal reform which granted automatic birthright citizenship to some immigrantchildren but not to others, we show that for children of parents withtraditional identity, expanding economic opportunities can reduce well-beingand assimilation.
