Study to increase the proportion of rail journeys to South Tyrol completed

Increase in rail travel to 25%

On behalf of IDM Südtirol, the competence centre has conducted a study on increasing the proportion of tourists travelling to South Tyrol by train. The study examines the proportion of guests travelling to South Tyrol by train today and in the future, particularly after the opening of the Brenner Base Tunnel, by analysing the current situation based on a survey in Italy and Germany. Based on the results, an analysis of potential is presented that takes into account various scenarios for the number of train connections, the capacity utilisation of trains and the acceptance of rail travel by holidaymakers. An estimate is also made of the CO2 savings resulting from the increase in rail travellers. Finally, a benchmark analysis presents examples of good practice relating to the process steps in the rail journey chain, bundles of measures to improve service, offers and communication as well as an implementation strategy.
