The aim of the project is to get a preliminary data-based account on the use of the different languages, language varieties and dialects of South Tyrol. Through participant observation we will collect a corpus of rapid, highly standardized and mainly transactional verbal interactions, such as requests of street directions.
 
Keeping the communicative setting variable still will provide a clearer view on the influence that the socio-demographic and contextual factors play in the code choice process. By considering previous similar surveys in bi- and multilingual contexts (Strasbourg, Brussels, Montreal and, in Italy, Apulia and Piedmont) we aim to carry out both a qualitative and a quantitative analysis. Firstly, we will pay attention both on linguistic features (phonetics, phonology, morphology...) and on the conversational structure, e.g. the norms followed in this specific kind of speech event. Secondly, we will perform a statistical multivariate analysis to evaluate the probabilistic weight that different social variables exert on speakers behaviour.


L’obiettivo del progetto è quello di ottenere una descrizione preliminare, basata su dati empirici, dell’uso delle diverse lingue, varietà di lingua e dialetti presenti in Alto Adige – Südtirol. In particolare tramite osservazione partecipante si raccoglierà un corpus di interazioni verbali brevi, altamente standardizzate e dal carattere principalmente transazionale come per esempio le richieste di indicazioni stradali.
 
L’identica cornice comunicativa permetterà di osservare l’azione che i fattori socio-demografici e contestuali esercitano sulla scelta del codice da parte dell’intervistato. Basandosi su analoghe indagini svolte in contesti bi- e plurilingui (Strasburgo, Bruxelles, Montreal e, in Italia, in Puglia e in Piemonte) ci si propone di svolgere un’analisi qualitativa e quantitativa dei dati. Nel primo caso si metteranno in luce sia le caratteristiche linguistiche (fonetiche, fonologiche, morfologiche...) dei codici usati che la struttura delle mosse conversazionali e le norme che regolano questo tipo di evento comunicativo. Nel secondo caso si svolgerà un’analisi statistica multivariata con l’obiettivo di ‘misurare’ il peso probabilistico che le diverse variabili sociali esercitano sul comportamento linguistico dei parlanti.

Ziel des Projekts ist es, anhand empirischer Daten eine erste Beschreibung der Sprachverwendung in Bezug auf die verschiedenen Sprachen, Varietäten und Dialekte zu liefern, die in Südtirol vorhanden sind. Durch teilnehmende Beobachtung wird ein Korpus von kurzen, höchst standardisierten Interaktionen transaktionaler Art gesammelt; ein Beispiel dafür ist die Frage nach einem Weg.

Bei Beibehaltung des kommunikativen Rahmens wird die Analyse der Rolle ermöglicht, welche sozio-demografische und kontextuelle Faktoren auf die Sprachwahl der Teilnehmer spielen. Basierend auf ähnlichen Untersuchungen in zwei- oder mehrsprachigen Kontexten (Strassburg, Brüssel, Montreal, sowie in Italien: in Apulien und im Piemont) wird eine qualitative und quantitative Analyse der Daten durchgeführt.

Auf der einen Seite werden grammatikalische Eigenschaften des verwendeten Sprachsystems sowie die Gesprächsstruktur und die Regeln in Betracht gezogen, die ein solches kommunikatives Ereignis bestimmen. Auf der anderen Seite wird eine statistische Analyse durchgeführt, um mögliche Einflüsse zu 'messen', die die unterschiedlichen sozialen Variablen auf das sprachliche Verhalten ausüben.
