Postgraduate education
In 1999 the Higher Education Ministers of 29 European states met in Bologna to discuss reforms for European university education.
The results of that meeting are contained in the Bologna Declaration: by signing the Declaration the 40 European countries committed themselves to abolishing the old university system and adopting, by 2010, a system based on two main cycles; the first and second cycle. The main aim of the Bologna Declaration is to create a system of qualifications that are comparable throughout Europe.
In Italy, the Bologna Declaration was implemented as from the 2001/2002 academic year with the D.M. 509/99 reform. From that time on, postgraduate education has taken on an extremely important role. After a three-year undergraduate degree, students can continue their studies by following a
postgraduate course
, a
first-level master
or other
university courses
. After a postgraduate degree students can continue with a
second-level master
or a
research PhD
.
