PhD research degrees
PhD degrees last three years and are an integral part of the third cycle teaching at university. These degrees are study programmes that have been designed to provide participants with the necessary skills to work at universities, public institutions or private centres involved in scientific research. These programmes contribute to the development of scientific research and the growth in employment of young qualified researchers (article 2 of the Free University of Bozen/Bolzano’s regulations for PhDs).

After the 1999 reform, you can apply for a PhD after having achieved a postgraduate qualification in Italy or abroad. Enrolment can only be done once you have passed an entrance examination and to be awarded a PhD you must write a thesis and successfully defend it in an exam.
