Step 3: Requirements for your stay in Italy   
EU citizens
For stays of longer than three months, EU citizens must take out a residence certificate which can be obtained from the town or city’s registry office (“anagrafe”). In order to obtain this certificate the following papers need to be presented: enrolment certificate health insurance certificate that you have the financial means to stay in Italy  

Non-EU citizens
If you are a non-EU citizen, you have to obtain a study visa from the Italian embassy or consulate  before leaving your country. Within 8 working days of entry into the Schengen area you have to apply for the residence permit in one of the post offices in Bozen/Bolzano. In order to obtain the residence permit in Bozen/Bolzano, you need the following documents:
  • a valid passport
  • 4 identical and recent passport photos (with a white background)
  • a photocopy of every single page of your valid passport (including the empty pages)
  • a certificate that you have a place to live in Italy (obtained from the hostel or your landlord)
  • enrolment certificate from the University
  • medical insurance valid for the entire length of your stay in Italy
  • a revenue stamp (marca da bollo) of € 14.62 (bought in Italy).  
The International Relations Office will help you with obtaining the residence permit.  

Medical Assistance
If you are an EU citizen, in order to obtain medical assistance in Italy, you need to bring the European Health Insurance Card or a copy of the European Union medical insurance form, issued by your local medical insurance in your country. Alternatively, or if you are a non-EU Erasmus Mundus student without the Erasmus Mundus scholarship, you should bring private medical insurance.If you are an Erasmus Mundus student and scholarship holder, your insurance scheme will depend on the European Masters Programme you are enrolled in.

Italian tax code & Bank Account

The International Relations Office helps the Erasmus Mundus students with obtaining the Italian tax code and opening a bank account. The Italian tax code (codice fiscale) is how citizens identify themselves when dealing with the public administration system. The tax code issued by the Tax Office (Agenzia delle Entrate) is the only tax code accepted in Italy. All that one needs to do to obtain this tax code is to go to the Tax Office with an identity card; foreigners normally have to present their passport. Further information: www.agenziaentrate.it.
