Assessment Test in Mathematics - Mathematic Prerequisite
During the first week after the deadline for enrolment, students of the first year of the Bachelor in Computer Science and Engineering have to sit and pass an assessment test in Mathematics, organized by the Faculty of Computer Science (ENROLMENT IS NOT REQUIRED).

Students who do not pass this test have to improve their knowledge of mathematics by the end of the first semester of the degree course. This is achieved by attending a Mathematics Support Course during the first semester organized by the Faculty of Computer Science. Students have to attend at least 75% of the lectures. Only once students have attended this Course can they sit exams in the second semester and enrol for the second year.

The material involved in the Assessment Test in Mathematics is as follows:

  • Elementary notions of set theory and propositional logic
  • The fundamental numerical sets (N, Z, Q, and R), the algebra of fractions
  • The order structure of the real line and the absolute value
  • Linear and quadratic equations and inequalities
  • The algebra of polynomials and factorization (Ruffini's rule)
  • Powers and the laws of powers, the algebra of radicals
  • Cartesian plane geometry, equations and graphical representation of lines and parabolas
  • Linear and linear/quadratic systems of equations plus their graphical representation as the intersection points of lines and parabolas
  • Rational equations and inequalities and the sign diagram
  • Exponentials and logarithms
  • Trigonometry
  • Problem Solving
  • some basic probability and logical problems
