Degree in Applied Computer Science for Students in Companies
4-year programme alternating study & work experience
The Assoimprenditori Alto Adige, the Free University of Bozen - Bolzano and the Politecnico di Torino have devised, developed and implemented in close collaboration a new experimental degree model alternating study and work called "Students in Companies".
Launched in Academic Year 2003/2004, this model encountered a big success with students.
This is highly innovative educational project allows holders of secondary school diplomas to start a mixed career of university studies (Bachelor in Applied Computer Science) and work, paid even when just attending university. The curriculum lasts 4 years, and the special academic path alternates traditional course attendance and stimulating working activity in a company.
The goal of the project is to prepare young students to be highly qualified, so that they can meet the actual needs of the current labour market, considering the chronic lack of computer science professionals in the market.
- Aims of the project: create a synergy between university and company by permitting a group of students holding a secondary school diploma to be hired as working students by local companies while at the same time achieving a 1st level degree in Computer Science.
-
Admission: enrolment to the regular study course, followed by a company selection process that the student must successfully pass; at the end of the company selection phase, the candidate stipulates a specific apprenticeship contract which determines his final admission to the project.
- Age limit: candidates must not be more than 28 years of age (apprenticeship contract)
- Limited number: candidates are selected in agreement with the companies participating to the project.
- Course duration: 4 years (working periods in the company alternate with periods of pure study at the university, thus the conventional three-year duration of the course has been extended by one year).
- Attendance: most exams are prepared “traditionally” (full time attendance of the course and examination), while the remaining exams are prepared by distance learning (working projects in the company and usual examination); on average, the students spends 45% of the time at the university (average attendance referred to the 4 years and calculated on the basis of the academic calendar).
- Work Contract: the selected student stipulates a work contract with the company and receives a monthly salary (13 monthly payments per year) during 3 of the 4 years of duration of the study course, paid even when just attending university. This allows students to earn a living while studying. The apprenticeship contract goes from June of the 1st course year to May of the 4th course year, lasting a total of 3 years. The gross salary has been agreed with the labor unions.
-
| Year |

- Support: the student is accompanied during all pahses of the study path. A company tutor supervises the education in the company and a university tutor monitors the university education and organizes and supervises study groups during the periods of work in the company (distance learning).
- Outcomes: the students attains a Bachelor's Degree in Applied Computer Science while achieving an important work experience and earning a sathisfying and increasing salary also during the period spent at the university.
